Sam Altman Meets Samsung as PC RAM Supply Stays Tight

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met Samsung executives in South Korea on October 31, putting AI’s demand for memory back in focus for anyone watching PC RAM prices. Samsung confirmed talks about AI development and potential business opportunities at its training center in Yongin. Its account of the meeting disclosed no new order, shipment volumes or pricing. What Sam Altman and Samsung discussed

Samsung linked the visit to its October 2025 letter of intent with OpenAI on AI infrastructure and memory. At the time, OpenAI said Samsung and SK hynix planned to expand advanced memory production toward a target of 900,000 DRAM wafer starts per month. Wafer starts measure the volume of silicon entering manufacturing. The figure described a future production goal across the partnerships. It did not quantify current shipments or how much memory OpenAI would receive. OpenAI’s 2025 partnership announcement

The trip followed a podcast in which Altman discussed how memory is used in cloud servers and personal computers. That conversation was about how often hardware is put to work. The Samsung meeting concerned how the companies might work together on AI. Taken Social covered the earlier comments separately. What Altman said about PC memory

Why AI server demand can affect PC RAM prices

A DDR5 laptop module, a server DDR5 module and the high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, paired with an AI accelerator serve different systems. They do, however, draw on the same broad pool of DRAM manufacturing capacity. When producers prioritize server memory or devote more capacity to HBM, PC makers can face tighter supply even if their own demand is flat. Samsung’s October 29 earnings release highlighted high-speed server DDR5 and HBM as areas of focus, while SK hynix reported stronger server DDR5 sales and shipments of HBM4. TrendForce’s October 30 outlook projected that PC DRAM contract prices would keep rising in the fourth quarter of 2026, though more slowly, and that PC DRAM supply growth would ease in 2027. Those contracts are upstream deals. A U.S. retailer’s price for a particular memory kit can move differently as inventory and promotions change. TrendForce’s October 30 PC DRAM outlook

For PC buyers, the contract-price trend offers a more direct signal than a meeting between two companies. Samsung has confirmed that talks took place. The next tangible development would be a disclosed order, a production schedule or a change in how suppliers allocate capacity.
