SAN SEBASTIÁN, Spain — Real Sociedad and Lyon shared the points in a 1–1 Europa League draw on Thursday, with Corentin Tolisso’s second-half goal canceling the advantage created by Orri Óskarsson before the interval.
The result denied Sociedad a second consecutive European victory after its emphatic win over Lillestrøm. Lyon, meanwhile, recovered from falling behind to take a point away from home and prevent the Spanish side from converting its first-half lead into three points.
Cadena SER’s match account records Óskarsson’s opener in the 27th minute. Tolisso replied after halftime. The scoring pattern left Sociedad with the frustration of a lead lost and Lyon with the more satisfying outcome from the position it had faced at the break.
The point keeps both clubs’ league-phase campaigns in motion. It does not settle their final place in a competition in which the difference between direct qualification, a playoff and elimination will depend on the complete eight-match schedule.
A lead that Sociedad could not protect
Óskarsson’s goal put the home side in front during a first half that ended with the advantage intact. The task after the interval was to preserve that position while finding opportunities to extend it. Tolisso’s response changed the shape of the contest and forced Sociedad to seek a winner again.
Basque broadcaster EITB described the draw as a setback to Sociedad’s effort to move toward the top eight. That is a question of opportunity rather than elimination: a home win would have improved its position more substantially, but there are still matches available to change the table.
The available statistical picture also suggests a contest in which neither side monopolized the attempts. Sofascore’s report recorded 11 shots for Sociedad and 12 for Lyon. Shot totals alone do not measure the quality of each chance, but they provide context beyond the final score.
Tolisso’s equalizer was the decisive contribution for the visitors. A midfielder arriving with a goal can change an away performance’s value even when the team does not go on to win. For Lyon, recovering a point prevented the evening from becoming another missed opportunity in a campaign where consistency matters.
The qualification picture remains open
Sociedad’s opening four results have produced five points: a defeat against Bournemouth, draws with Union Saint-Gilloise and Lyon, and the win at Lillestrøm. The UEFA fixture record supplies the sequence behind that total.
That position leaves room for recovery but little reason to dismiss the value of dropped home points. The league phase rewards sustained accumulation across different opponents. A large victory in one match improves goal difference and confidence, but it does not replace the points available in the next fixture.
For Lyon, the away draw offers a platform rather than a completed qualification argument. Its remaining opponents, home results and the movement of other teams in the table will determine how valuable Thursday’s point ultimately becomes.
The immediate outcome is straightforward. Óskarsson supplied the home side’s opening; Tolisso supplied Lyon’s answer. Sociedad could not turn its halftime advantage into a victory, and Lyon left San Sebastián with a point earned through a second-half response.
