GETAFE, Spain — Malick Yalcouyé supplied the decisive goal as Brighton & Hove Albion beat Getafe 1–0 away from home in the Conference League on Thursday, converting a tight contest into a valuable European victory.
The midfielder headed in during the second half, with Costinha providing the headed assist, according to Getafe’s official match center. Brighton then protected the advantage through the final whistle, leaving the Spanish club without the home result it needed to improve its early league-phase position.
The outcome turned on a passage of attacking execution rather than an early breakthrough. The sides reached halftime at 0–0, keeping the contest open and making the first goal increasingly important. Yalcouyé’s finish gave Brighton something concrete to defend and forced Getafe to seek an equalizer that never arrived.
Getafe’s record before the match had included a draw with Universitatea Craiova and defeat by Lugano. Another loss leaves the hosts under pressure to make their remaining fixtures count. Brighton, by contrast, can assess the trip through the straightforward combination of an away win and a clean sheet.
Yalcouyé makes his starting opportunity count
Brighton’s selection had already drawn attention before kickoff. Sussex Express’s lineup coverage highlighted the decisions involving Jaouen Hadjam and Yalcouyé. The latter’s contribution became the defining feature of the evening: a place in the starting side followed by the goal that settled the match.
The official commentary places the breakthrough in the 64th minute. It was an aerial finish, with Costinha’s intervention helping deliver the opportunity. That sequence mattered all the more because neither side had established a lead before the interval.
Brighton also needed its goalkeeper. The official match statistics credited Bart Verbruggen with four saves, a reminder that a narrow victory depends on preventing the opponent’s response as well as taking an attacking chance. Getafe finished without a goal despite creating work for the visiting keeper.
Lewis Dunk had been replaced by Luka Vušković at halftime. The defensive change was therefore part of a second-half performance in which Brighton both moved ahead and completed the job. The result does not demonstrate that every phase of the match was comfortable; it shows that Brighton found a way to leave with the points.
A useful away result at the league phase’s midpoint
The Conference League uses a six-match league phase. Thursday’s third round therefore represents the halfway stage, earlier in each team’s schedule than the equivalent fourth round in the Europa League. That shorter program increases the cost of leaving a winnable home fixture empty-handed. Getafe still has opportunities to change its position, but it has used one of a limited number of dates without adding a point. The task now is to turn future chances into results rather than rely on the possibility of other teams dropping points.
For Brighton, the win offers a more favorable platform. European away matches can demand patience against an opponent with its own pressing need for a result. On this occasion, Brighton stayed level through the first half, obtained its breakthrough after the restart and kept the score intact.
Yalcouyé’s name belongs at the center of the result, while the clean sheet explains why his single goal was enough. Getafe had the home setting and a full match in which to respond. Brighton had the finish that counted and the defensive outcome needed to make it decisive.
