SUNDERLAND, England — Dinamo Zagreb scored twice before halftime and held Sunderland scoreless at the Stadium of Light on Thursday, winning 2–0 in the Europa League and adding to the pressure on home coach Régis Le Bris.

Luka Stojković opened the scoring and then helped create the second for Dion Drena Beljo. Sunderland could not recover after the interval, despite changes from the bench and a series of opportunities that kept the visiting defense occupied.

Sky Sports’ completed match report put the Black Cats’ run at one win in six matches across all competitions. That broader record makes the defeat more significant than a single disappointing European night: it extends a period in which the team has struggled to turn performances into results.

The score also reflects Dinamo’s ability to make the first half count. The Croatian side established the advantage before Sunderland could find a goal, leaving the hosts to chase a match that had moved firmly in the visitors’ favor.

Stojković shapes the decisive first half

Stojković’s opener came from a volley following a corner. The match record lists the goal in the 22nd minute. His involvement did not end there: a clipped pass later released Beljo, whose finish made it 2–0 in the 39th.

Those two moments gave Dinamo both a lead and a cushion. Sunderland’s defensive work in the decisive passages was therefore as important to the outcome as its failure to score. An opponent that takes advantage of space around a corner and then a passing opening can make a home side’s recovery increasingly difficult.

Sunderland did come close. Thomas Meunier struck the woodwork before halftime, while Kevin Danso hit the bar after the restart. Wilson Isidor also had a headed effort ruled out for offside following a video review. Those incidents offered openings without changing the official score.

Le Bris made four changes at halftime and later introduced Brian Brobbey. The alterations did not produce a goal. Dinamo left with the clean sheet needed to make its first-half work decisive.

European defeat compounds a difficult domestic stretch

For Sunderland, the result has to be assessed alongside the recent sequence rather than treated as an isolated mishap. A team can endure a poor evening and recover quickly. A run of one victory in six gives the coaching staff a more persistent problem to address, particularly when defensive setbacks repeatedly leave it having to come from behind.

That is an assessment of the sporting position, not a report that a managerial change has been decided. Pressure on a coach and an actual dismissal are different developments. Any decision about Le Bris’s future belongs to Sunderland and would require a separate, verified announcement.

Dinamo’s immediate achievement is less ambiguous. It won away, scored through two players who combined effectively in the decisive half and protected its lead during the home side’s attempts to respond. The result was secured without requiring a third goal to settle the match.

The Europa League’s eight-match program leaves room for teams to improve their standing, but it also turns each missed home opportunity into work that must be done elsewhere. The official competition table sets out the developing position after the fourth round.

Sunderland’s next response will need to be measured in points and defensive reliability. Thursday provided near misses, substitutions and moments of attacking pressure, but none of them reduced the deficit. Dinamo had already done the scoring that mattered and left the Stadium of Light with the win.
