Jason Sudeikis is taking his connection to sport out of the fictional world of Ted Lasso and onto ESPN’s College GameDay. The actor has been announced as the guest picker for the program’s November 7 appearance in South Bend, where No. 11 Notre Dame hosts No. 1 Miami.

The announcement was made by Notre Dame and the television program, according to reporting from OregonLive carried by Yahoo Sports. Sudeikis discussed the visit on The Pat McAfee Show, describing family connections that make the appearance more personal than a routine celebrity stop.

His maternal grandfather attended Notre Dame, as did his uncle George Wendt, the actor best known for playing Norm on Cheers, Sudeikis said in that interview. Wendt did not complete his degree. Sudeikis also recalled attending a basketball camp on campus when he was a child.

Those details give the booking a natural fit. A guest picker’s role is to bring personality and a connection with the host community to a broadcast already organized around anticipation. The actor’s Notre Dame history offers something more specific than celebrity recognition alone.

From a television coach to a college-football stage

As the central performer and a creative force behind Ted Lasso, Sudeikis became closely associated with a story about coaching, belonging and the emotional life of a team. The appeal of seeing him on a college-football set does not depend on confusing that fictional role with professional sporting expertise.

The timing also gives the broadcast competitive weight. The first College Football Playoff committee rankings placed Miami first and Notre Dame eleventh. Their meeting therefore arrives with postseason positioning in view, giving the campus celebration a sporting significance beyond the celebrity segment.

That distinction is especially relevant for Sudeikis. The affectionate association with a fictional coach supplies an easy cultural connection, but his family history supplies the real one. The two can coexist without turning a television appearance into a claim about his playing or coaching credentials.

ESPN’s announcement places the guest appearance within a major college-football weekend. Sudeikis attended the 1988 Notre Dame–Miami game, a rivalry meeting later explored in the network’s 30 for 30 documentary series. Returning for another high-profile matchup supplies a direct connection between his childhood experience and the current broadcast.

Notre Dame’s official game-day schedule lists the live show on Library Lawn from 9 a.m. to noon and the football kickoff at 7:30 p.m. The morning program and the evening game are separate events. Fans planning to attend can use the university’s schedule for the campus activities surrounding both.

Why the local connection matters

College-football broadcasts depend on place. A campus, its traditions and the people gathering there give a national matchup a local identity. A guest with a documented connection can help bridge that distinction between the nationwide audience and the host community.

For Notre Dame supporters, Sudeikis’s remarks offer that connection through family memory. For viewers who know him primarily through film and television, the broadcast provides a chance to see how those personal ties shape his sporting loyalties. Neither angle requires manufactured drama about what he might say or which teams he might pick.

The selections themselves will be known when he makes them on air. Until then, predictions circulating under his name should not be treated as his actual choices. The established news is the booking and the family background he has publicly discussed—a small but distinctive meeting of entertainment, college sport and an actor’s own history.
