Russian forces launched over 20 cruise missiles and two drones at Ukraine, resulting in at least 19 fatalities, many of whom were killed when two missiles struck an apartment building in central Ukraine. Among the victims were three children.

This marked the first missile attack on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, in almost two months. Ukrainian air force personnel managed to intercept 11 cruise missiles and two unmanned aerial vehicles over the city. There were no reports of successful strikes.

The assault on the nine-story residential building occurred in Uman, a city approximately 215 kilometers (134 miles) south of Kyiv. The capital region's governor, Ihor Taburets, reported that 17 people died in this attack, including two 10-year-olds and a toddler. A 75-year-old woman from a neighboring building also lost her life due to internal bleeding caused by the powerful blast.

Ukrainian national police stated that 17 people were injured, while three children were rescued from the debris. Nine individuals were hospitalized. The attacks were far from the conflict's extensive front lines or active combat zones in eastern Ukraine.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that the latest long-range air-launched cruise missiles targeted locations where Ukrainian military reserve units were stationed before deployment. Lt. Gen. Igor Konashenkov, the Defense Ministry's spokesperson, confirmed that all intended targets were hit, but did not mention any specific areas or residential buildings.

Survivors from the Uman attack described terrifying moments as the missiles struck in the darkness. The bombardment resulted in significant property damage and loss of life. Local volunteers aided nearly 150 emergency personnel at the scene, with two aid stations providing support.

In another incident, a 31-year-old woman and her 2-year-old daughter were killed in the eastern city of Dnipro. Four other people were injured, and a private residence and business were damaged. These attacks occurred shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy mentioned a phone call with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, who agreed to send a peace envoy to Ukraine and other countries.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba expressed that the missile strikes demonstrated Russia's lack of interest in a peace deal. Meanwhile, the Moscow-appointed mayor of Donetsk, a city held by Russia, reported that a Ukrainian rocket killed seven civilians on Friday.
