A parking garage in Lower Manhattan experienced a roof collapse on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in trapped individuals and damaged vehicles. The incident occurred around 4:15 p.m. on Ann Street, situated between Nassau Street and William Street. Images from the scene revealed cars piled atop one another due to the collapse.
Emergency responders arrived at the location following reports of individuals trapped inside. However, due to concerns about the structure's stability, the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) withdrew its personnel. FDNY officials reported that they have members on tower ladders, a robotic team with drones, and a dog to assist in the situation.
Christopher Marte, a New York City Council member, shared from the scene that a "few" individuals are stuck in an elevator and inside the building. He expressed hope for everyone's safe evacuation. There were no immediate reports on injuries, although one person was seen being taken from the scene on a stretcher in a video.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams' office urged the public to avoid the area due to the ongoing emergency response, and the mayor has since arrived on-site. Governor Kathy Hochul stated that she is maintaining close contact with Mayor Adams and local authorities.
In response to the incident, Pace University, which is in close proximity to the parking garage, evacuated students from nearby residences at 33 Beekman Street and 161 William Street. Classes have been canceled, and the university is working on finding alternative lodging for the affected students.
Pace University student Charlie Franklin commented on the situation, saying that he and his roommate had always thought the garage looked unsafe. Franklin hopes that the university can provide accommodations for them during this time.
The collapse has also led to delays in the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's (MTA) train schedules. The 2, 3, A, C, J, and Z trains are operating at reduced speeds near Fulton Street.
