In a thrilling main event at the UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas, Mackenzie Dern didn't increase her remarkable tally of submission victories. However, she proved her multifaceted prowess by unequivocally defeating Angela Hill.
Dern, with an impressive track record of 13-3 and a double world champion in jiu-jitsu, demonstrated her firm command throughout the 25-minute fight. She led most of the bout in tight clinches and effective groundwork, classic stances to prepare for a submission. Despite these circumstances, Hill, with a 15-13 career record, displayed admirable defense, warding off numerous armbar opportunities. Hill endured significant physical tolls during the battle, evidenced by her facial bruises and nearly closed left eye, but held on until the end of the one-sided contest.
The fight concluded with two judges awarding the fight 49-44 in favor of Dern, while the third judge gave it 49-43. Dern expressed her intent to rival Charles "Do Bronx" Oliveira's record of 16 submissions. She was hinting at her ambition to surpass Gillian Robertson, who holds the record for most submissions among women fighters at seven.
While renowned for her grappling expertise, Dern's striking prowess played a crucial role in her victory. Despite her initial unsuccessful takedown attempts, she managed to floor Hill in the first round with a potent right-hand punch. In the third round, she stunned Hill with a powerful knee to the chin.
Coming off a phase where she lost two out of her last three fights, Dern was particularly aggressive in this fight, landing a career-best 126 significant strikes, 61 of which came during ground control, where she spent nearly half of the fight.
Hill, though on the losing side, made her mark by landing 66 significant strikes, which helped her surpass Frankie Edgar to become the second-highest in UFC history. Her total UFC career strikes now stand at 1,820, second only to Max Holloway's 3,122.
