Chicago's Mayor Lori Lightfoot and incoming Mayor Brandon Johnson both addressed the disorderly events that occurred in the city's downtown district over the weekend, resulting in a significant law enforcement reaction.

Late Saturday night, 15 people, including nine adults and six minors, were apprehended as crowds, potentially numbering over a thousand, assembled near Millennium Park, engaging in unruly and disruptive conduct, according to Chicago police. During one incident, amidst a sizable gathering, two teenagers were shot at the intersection of State and Madison streets.

A similar event took place the day before at 31st Street Beach, where a 14-year-old boy was shot during a large assembly advertised as a "teen trend" gathering.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot expressed her concern over the situation, stating that while many young attendees aimed to enjoy themselves and the warm weather, some displayed "reckless, disrespectful, and unlawful behavior." She emphasized the importance of parents and guardians knowing their children's whereabouts and taking responsibility for their actions, instilling respect for others and their property.

Lightfoot also mentioned that she has been assured by Chicago police leadership that they will make necessary adjustments to address these youth-related issues as summer approaches.

Mayor-Elect Brandon Johnson, through his transition committee, Chicago for the People, denounced the destructive activities witnessed in the Loop and lakefront areas over the weekend, stating that they were "unacceptable" and had no place in the city. However, he also cautioned against vilifying young people who may lack opportunities in their communities.

Johnson emphasized the need for the city to collaborate in creating safe and responsible spaces for young people to gather under adult supervision, ensuring that all parts of Chicago remain welcoming to both residents and visitors.
